Welcome to the Cells, Tissues, Organs and Organ Systems Unit!

This science unit consists of parts. Each part is outlined below. We will begin with a teacher run, microscope lab and then you will begin to work in your groups. Each group will be focusing on answering an Inquiry question. Each group will be split into 3 or 4 smaller groups and assigned a task. You will be responsible for learning about the specifics of that task and then teaching what you have learned in a fun filled, interactive Science lab day. At the end of this project, we will have three days where you and your group will be teaching the rest of the class about your topic. My role as the teacher will be to guide you through learning about your question and helping you find interesting, interactive and fun ways to teach the rest of the class. Have fun and make it interesting!

Part One: Teacher Lead Workshop: Microscopes

  • In this section you will learn
    • the parts of a microscope,
    • how to focus a microscope
    • how to prepare a wet mount slide
    • how to use the digital microscope.

Part Two: Learning About Your Question

  • You will be assigned a task to complete.
  • You and your partner(s) will be given information and activities to complete about your task.
  • You will research your own information about your task
  • You will find ways to present the information that you learned to your classmates as part of your Workshop Day.
  • Each Task Group will produce 2-3 questions that the rest of the class will answer as they rotate through your stations on your Workshop Day.

Part Three: Workshop Days

  • At the end of the project, each Task Group will set up one station for each task.
  • Your classmates will rotate through your stations.
  • You will teach them about your topic through any means that you think will be interesting and fun.
  • Your classmates will answer the questions that you have made up to help them make sure that they have learned what they were supposed to during Workshop Day.

Part Four: Teacher Run DNA Extraction Lab

  • As a class, we will be extracting our own DNA. Just cause it's cool.

Part Five: The Test

  • After all of the labs and workshop days, you will answer the five big questions that are on the back bulletin board. Keep all of your stuff!
